Neighbors of a family in Southern Illinois alerted police that they had noticed suspicious buckets around the Benson’s property. However, when police arrived, expecting to find a methamphetamine manufacturing facility, they instead were directed to a stash of maple syrup.

Laura Benson informed police that her husband had been cooking up the syrup for the past five years and sent the officers home with samples.

Officers can often wrongfully detect a legal substance as an illegal drug, such as in the case described above. However, sometimes those mistakes result in wrongful accusations and criminal charges.
